Version 1.0

Instructions
------------
AIM OF THE GAME: The aim of the game is to remove as many pegs as
possible from a star-shaped board, by jumping, and taking pieces, like
in draughts or checkers.
STATUS BAR: Just below the Mariner's-Mate logo at the top of the
screen is where all messages will be placed during the game.
SAILING DIRECTION: At the start of the game, you will be asked which
direction you wish to sail in. Answer, this question by clicking on
one of the eight compass directions (N/S/E/W/NE etc.), or by clicking
on the centre diamond of the compass, which makes the computer
randomly choose a direction for you. Once you have chose the direction
you wish to sail (or the computer has chose for you), a black line
will be drawn from the centre of the compass to that direction, to
remind you where you are sailing throughout the game.
TIME LIMIT: At the start of the game, you also have the option of
having a time limit. If you want one, you will be asked how many
seconds and minutes you want it to last. Enter these figures, using
the keyboard. However, the game automatically ends when the Time Taken
meter gets to 99 minutes and 59 seconds!
MOVING: During the game you will be prompted to select moves. You do
this by clicking on the piece you wish to move, and then clicking on
its destination. For the move to be legal, the pegs destination must
be empty and the peg must have taken a piece (by passing over it). Any
illegal moves will receive a low pitched 'Ping!'.
PAUSING: Should you wish to pause the game at any time, you can do
this by clicking on the Mariner's-Mate logo at the top of the screen.
FINISHING: When you have made all the legal moves possible, or have
had enough, press ESCAPE and answer 'Yes', to any prompts. The game
will automatically quit if there is only one peg remaining in the
board.
RANK: Once you have finished the game, you will receive a rank. Your
ultimate objective is to receive the rank of 'CAPTAIN!', by leaving
only one peg in the board, in the direction you are sailing.
HISTORICAL NOTE: This game, a favourite of sailors, evolved from a
European version dating circa 1300 A.D. and defines the eight points
of a mariners compass.
DETAILS: This game was made in AMOS, and compiled, using the 'AMOS
COMPILER'. Thanks must go to Europress Software and François Lionet,
for putting together and marketing AMOS!
WHY?: I made this game when I got back from a holiday in America. I
played a board game out there, exactly the same as this, with annoying
little pegs that could easily get lost. So I decided, to write it for
the Amiga, so I wouldn't have to worry about losing any of the pegs.
KNOWN BUGS: Occasionally, the timer in the game may stop. I not sure
whether this is a fault in my program, or due to the fact that other
programs, may also be taking up the processor time of the Amiga.
Also, occasionally the Time Taken timer and the Time Remaining timer
may get out of sync. I am not sure what causes this at the moment. Any
other bugs, should be reported to the address at the bottom of this
document.
This game is shareware, and if you use the program, you must
send me the shareware fee of £5 (or more), to the following address:
Daniel Smith,
47 Upfield,
Croydon,
Surrey,
CRO 5DR,
England
Also please send all bug reports, contributions, suggestions etc. to
the above address. Any letters I receive will be replied to if
necessary.
ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS: Thanks must go to my brother, Tom, for help in
testing the game.
Also, hello to the following people: Paul, Kolin, Barry, Graham, and
all the other Amiga owners who know me that i've missed out!
Have Fun!!!
